Writing a Book: Step 1 - Establish a Writing Space

When writing your book - whether it's your first, your tenth, or your hundredth, you want to establish your writing space, i.e. where you're going to write your book.

Every writer needs a place where they can sit down and write their book, poem, article, whatever it is they're writing. You can't write without your writing space.

Find a place where you'll work best - it can be anywhere; your desk, the kitchen table, Starbucks, your local library - anywhere. Make that place your own. If it's at home, stick up inspirational quotes on the wall that might help you focus and write your story. If it's in your local Starbucks or library, make yourself comfortable - even if it means bringing a cushion from home so that you can sit comfortably and properly. You don't need much in your writing space. All you need is the device you use to get your story down, whether it's pen and paper, your laptop, a typewriter. Try to turn your phone off or leave it in another room to avoid distraction and the urge of procrastination. You'll never get anything written if you keep scrolling through Instagram.

Personally, I write best in the kitchen, sitting at the table in the late evening where there is no TV and not a lot of traffic to distract me. It enables me to focus and continue from where I left off the previous day.

Setting up your personal writing space ensures that when you sit down in that specific location, your brain automatically associates it with writing, and it's what you want to do. You sit down, set up and write as each hour passes. So find that special place and get ready to start that book you've always dreamed of writing!
